African Wishing Basket - Large

$ 42.00

African wishing baskets are part of a rich tradition of handwoven craftsmanship that has spanned thousands of years. These fair trade baskets are crafted from natural sweet grass wrapped with repurposed plastic material, blending sustainability with heritage. The sweet grass used is a renewable, biodegradable material, produced with minimal energy and sun-dried to maintain its eco-friendly nature. Expect slight imperfections, a testament to the handmade process and the recycled plastic used. Each lidded basket is unique, showcasing the artistry and cultural significance of its maker.

These baskets are produced by women weavers in Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Senegal, and Uganda, many of whom are smallholder farmers. As members of the Fair Trade Federation, the organization partners directly with these women to ensure fair trade practices. The sale of these woven goods provides supplemental income, improving the livelihoods of their families, and supports the economic viability of smallholder farming, empowering women farmers to maintain control of their land.

If ordered online, your basket will be chosen at random based on current availability. If you wish to pick out your basket, please visit us in-store at The Museum & Garden Shop at Newfields.
