Published with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), this landmark art book features approximately 140 works spanning from around 1800 to the present, with painting, photography, sculpture, prints, drawing, mixed media, and more reflecting Black life from emancipation and the Harlem Renaissance through the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the 1990s, and Black Lives Matter. Centering themes of love, family, community, identity, and joy, the collection includes work by influential artists such as Kerry James Marshall, Amy Sherald, Kehinde Wiley, Carrie Mae Weems, Mickalene Thomas, Bisa Butler, Deana Lawson, James Van Der Zee, Charles White, and many others.
